Weeks after experiencing a controversial election that saw President Yoweri Museveni re-elected as president, political activist Stella Nyanzi has fled Uganda over political persecution.
The academic giant come politician has sought political asylum in Nairobi, Kenya. Her Kenyan lawyer Luchiri Wajackoyah confirmed.
The firebrand activist has been at the forefront of protests against President Yoweri Museveni’s atrocities.
She had threatened to lead a demonstration if presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu would not be released from a house arrest.
Police withdrew in line with a court order that directed authorities to either charge Wine with a crime or let him go free.
In 2020, Nyanzi and other protestors were arrested for carrying out demonstrations against the “slow distribution of food” during the Covid-19 lockdown.
In another case, Nyanzi was released from prison after a Ugandan High Court quashed an 18-month sentence that was handed to her for insulting the president. She had been found guilty of cyber harassment of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
